Learn about the early warning signs of depression, as depression is a very serious and at times debilitating mental disorder that can cause significant damage to one’s social relationships, career and personal life. As is the case with any disorder, the key to battling depression is hitting it before it blossoms into a truly big problem and overtakes a given sufferer’s life.
For what it’s worth, a normal amount of sadness and is an accepted and expected part of living life. Particularly after the loss of a job, family member or significant other, emotions can vary and bring about a ton of unresolved feelings that remotely resemble depression. Real depression and early warning signs of depression, however, occurs when people noticeably begin to lose interest in activities that they once derived a lot of pleasure from and appear exhausted on a regular basis despite not doing anything that would cause this type of a reaction.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, the following are notable early warning signs of depression: problems sleeping, lack of ability to concentrate, feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, inability to control negative thoughts, loss of appetite, irritability and suicidal thoughts.
By far, the worst and most troubling of early warning signs of depression is suicidal thoughts. A few indicators that someone is depressed to the point of contemplating suicide are: constant talk of self-harm, unusual preoccupation of death, calling or visiting people to say goodbye, and rapid changes of emotions.
Any and all combinations of the aforementioned thoughts may be early warning signs of depression, and anyone experiencing them should seek out help as soon as possible.
