What Foods Cause Depression

Unfortunately, the fact that certain foods actually add to, or what foods cause depression, seems to fly under the radar. While for years now, professionals have maintained that there are particular types of foods which can help individuals suffering from depression.

According to a number of recent reports, certain types of food, if consumed in excess, can bring about feelings of anxiety
and depression in otherwise mentally healthy individuals. What foods cause depression? These types of foods are often low in cholesterol, sugars and fat, and lead to a lower production of serotonin in the folks consuming the food.

Serotonin, of course, is key in providing feelings of happiness and joy.

The foods and/or drinks which can cause these depressive feelings should be consumed in moderation, and shouldn’t be abused under any circumstances. These foods and/or drinks include, but aren’t limited to: alcohol, stimulants, processed goods, serotonin and selenium blockers and many types of junk food are what foods cause depression.

Alcohol, which has traditionally been known as being particularly bad for the liver, can also have a number of negative effects on a person’s mental health and part of what foods cause depression. The problem with alcohol isn’t limited to causing depression, however. Often, individuals resort to using alcohol as a form of self-mediating for pre-existing cases of depression – something that can only lead to further mental health trauma.

Various forms of stimulants like tea, coffee and energy drinks have also been known to have negative ramifications as they apply to depressive behavior. While they may originally offer up an energy boost, these stimulants simply “borrow” that extra little bit necessary to get through a particular part of the day. What goes up, must come down, though. Anxiety, depression and insomnia are just a few of the well-known problems that may arise from consuming to many stimulants.

In this day and age, any fast food place you go to is bound to have a back room filled with processed foods. Aside from the obvious physical health concerns relating to foods that are packed with sodium for preservation purposes, the sodium itself is part of what foods cause depression.

Given the fact that serotonin and selenium are key in “happy” effects on individuals, it goes without saying that foods and drinks which block these things can ultimately lead to depression.

Finally, most research indicates that contrary to popular beliefs, there are in fact no mood-enhancement features in junk food. The quickly-made, poorly created chemicals and substances that go into this type of grub create momentary feelings of pleasure which may then be followed by much longer bouts of depression.

foods high in B-vitamins like brown rice, chicken, corn ,eggs, green leafs, legumes, meat, nuts, peas, sunflower seeds, nutritional yeast, Calcium (almonds, brewer's yeast, green leafs and cruciferous vegetables, fish with bones, sesame seeds, tofu), Magnesium (green leafs, brown rice, sesame seeds, shrimp, salmon) and Tryptophan (turkey, soy foods, peanuts, almonds).
