1. Equating stuff with happiness

  • Stuff will not make us happy

Wisdom Teaching from Bhagavad-gita: "As a boat on the water is swept away by a strong wind, even one of the senses on which the mind focuses can carry away a man's intelligence." (Bg. 2.67)

 

The Vedas teach that our five senses are pulling us all over the place. We want what we see and hear. And today, more than ever, we are flooded with things to want - to taste, to hear, to buy, to do. And we're driven crazy by it. It's overwhelming. That's why advertising is such big business. If you get the advert right and snag someone's senses, they are going to want your product.

Get in nature and engage your senses in natural beauty, sights, smells, sounds. That helps with grounding and calming anxiety.

Reign your mind and senses in with your breath.

Anti-dote the material. Practice mindful reading on spiritual topics. Feed your mind uplifting thoughts.

 

2. Giving power to those who aren't your well wishers

  • Worrying what they'll think
  • Justifying your choices and values
  • Feeling not enough

3. Being too hard on yourself

  • Your feelings are valid
  • You are allowed time
  • You have a voice and you have choice

Practice journalling or EFT Tapping to help yourself settle into allowance of space and time for your needs and your feelings.

It's OK to not be OK, it's OK to feel sad, it's OK to need to be alone sometimes.

4. Waiting for the good or ideal to happen

  • Waiting for the future robs us of today
  • Don't wait for "When I... retire, or loose weight, get my promotion, or win the lottery..."

 

Live now fully and deeply. Do the best you can, with what you already have, right now.
