A Poem: Tears

PTSD, Survivors Speak
Tears are uncomfortable;
sometimes they express our pain which cannot otherwise be expressed
Sometimes they express sorrow, remorse or regret
Sometimes they express joy and happiness
Sometimes they alert us to what is important to us
Sometimes it’s just walking against the wind

We most dislike tears when…we are afraid that others will see us as being weak
Sometimes because we feel weak
Sometimes they show our vulnerability and we don’t want the world to see it
Tears usually say that something is not right in our world (we’ve been hurt or are in pain)
Sometimes the burdens feel heavier while we cry

But…sometimes after a few tears or many…
We can think more clearly
Smile – at life
Understand – that they are normal and natural
Know – that we feel
Feel – lighter
Love – ourselves more easily
Make a plan
Accept the tears of others

And sometimes tears help us heal…
