It took so very, very long for me to understand what was wrong with me after trauma (and for others to understand too) that there were many times I’m sure my family was frustrated beyond belief with my irrational behaviors, fear and outbursts.
Being a caregiver to a trauma survivor is no easy task, which is why it’s important to have both survivors and caregivers get on the same page when it comes to the recovery process. Some of that has to do with education, some with communication, and some with collaboration.
After my trauma recovery process was complete I looked back and wrote this piece about 10 things I wish my family had known about PTSD. I offered it as a sort of guide for caregivers learning to understand us.
