Festive times are always difficult for people that suffer from Eating Disorders. It would be associated with food, food and more food.
Christmas is sometimes the only time of year when you get an opportunity to see your family, spend time together or catch up with friends.
However, if you are struggling with an Eating Disorder this can become a source of anxiety and ‘uneasy’ feeling; it may be that you fear arguments over how much or what you are eating, comments from relatives on your diet or appearance, or the stressful family environment may itself be a trigger to your Eating Disorder.
There are several ways you can help ease the pressures of Christmas and support those you know and love who may have an eating disorder.
Plan ahead - try to plan the specifics of your event such as when it’s going to happen, what food will be served and who’s coming, with those who are attending.
Don’t forget that it’s just one day – holiday plans don’t always work out the way you wanted but try to remember that it’s just one day – so don’t beat yourself up.
Extend the party - keep the celebrations going by playing games or watching a film. This can help take the focus off eating or associated negative thoughts, and allow you to be able to have some fun and enjoy yourself.
Christmas is a period of time that lacks real routine, and that can be difficult with an eating disorder, and can create really high levels of anxiety.
There are people you can talk to if you feel your feelings are overwhelming and you can’t cope.
They’re there for you if you’re struggling, don’t suffer alone, people understand and want to help you. Stay strong, beautiful.
