If you’ve been following this blog for more than two minutes, you know how much I love when we survivors take positive action(s) against the past. Take, for example, Sharon Smith, the founder and Executive Director of the National Trauma Institute (NTI). A trauma survivor herself, Sharon has unique insight into the importance of trauma care. NTI is all about raising awareness of and funds for trauma research, which has a direct impact on the quality of any life after trauma.
About her own horrific fall off a cliff, Sharon says, “I think the accident made me know what it’s like to be scared and clueless about what has happened to you—you can be lost in time and space for a long time after a traumatic injury,” she says. “I understand how it happens—no one thinks it’s going to happen to them.”
Sharon uses her own trauma insights to positively impact an enormous number of trauma survivors.
Find one positive action you can take to help someone else.
You, too, can use your experience to help others. Some ideas:
All it takes is one compassionate statement to make someone else feel acknowledged and validated. All it takes is one outlet to share your story to inspire and/or educate others. For example, you can contribute your own physical-trauma survivor story on the National Trauma Institute website. According to NTI:
We are actively seeking people who are interested in telling their stories of survival for possible inclusion in a national awareness campaign. If you have survived a traumatic injury and can share details of your care and recovery, we want to hear from you!
