It's Mental Health Week

From May 2 to May 8, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) is marking its annual Mental Health Week campaign to raise aware of mental health issues.   This year's theme is #GET LOUD FOR MENTAL HEALTH  and people are encouraged to get loud in different ways.  Some suggestions include:

  1.  Wear Green -   While green ribbons were used in the 1800s to identify people as "insane", the CMHA is urging people to wear green to show their support and to be loud and proud this week. CMHA_Logo_EN_80x2651[1]
  2. Speak up! -  Far too often, people with mental illness and their families are afraid to be identified because of the stigma involved.  Opening up a dialogue and informing the people around you that mental health is everybody's business is an essential part of overcoming shame.
  3. Be a Friend -  Reaching out to people in your life who are troubled or isolated can often be as simple as saying, "How are you, really?"   For those suffering in silence, finding a caring friend can be precious.
  4. Get Loud to find Help -  Whether it means educating your family doctor about mental health issues or finding resources in the community, being willing to get loud is the best way to find the help you need.  Any CMHA chapter can direct you to programs  in your own community.
  5. Get Loud with your Elected Representatives -  They're the ones who need to increase mental health funding that can make programs more available.  Don't be afraid to educate them about the issues that matter.
  6. Get Loud for a Healthier Workplace - Promoting mental health in the workplace can be as easy as contacting the CMHA's Workforce Mental Health Collaborative.  Learn more about health and safety training as well as dealing with workplace stress.
  7. Host an Event -  Organize an event in your own community to raise awareness on mental health and treatment.
