Recovering from trauma can feel like a full-time job – and it is! Coping, managing, seeking help, getting treatment, doing the work…. It’s a 24/7/365 kind of employment and you don’t have the luxury of leaving the office.
All of this makes it even more important that you schedule time off: Days when you give yourself a break from the usual work and get out of the recovery routine.
Taking the day off can mean deciding you won’t do any recovery assignments, you won’t have a therapy session, you won’t focus on being better than you have been or as much as possible as the way you used to… you will just BE, as you are in the present moment, doing something that is utterly unrelated to posttraumatic stress in any way.
Today is Memorial Day, a day we honor our veterans and those who serve. You, too, are serving — in the PTSD army. So you can make today your day, too.
I’m giving you permission to take the day off. What will you do to break the post-trauma routine and give yourself a breath of fresh air?
