PTSD Healing Thought of the Week: What If?

It’s normal after trauma to ‘What if’ yourself like crazy. I had What-If-itis myself. I was always wondering, ‘What if my trauma happens again?’, and ‘What if I don’t survive the next time?’ You know what all this what-iffing got me? Not very far down the road to recovery!

Norman Vincent Peale said,

The ‘how’ thinker gets problems solved effectively because he wastes no time with futile ‘ifs’.

I happen to think what ifs are important. They’re how we reassess our world after trauma, and how we plan to keep ourselves safe. The problem stems from what-ffing being the major activity in which we engage. So, it’s time to ask yourself, ‘Am I what-iffing to excess?’

You have enormous healing potential. The goal is learning to access it.

Dig deep. You can do this. I believe in you!
