Because of the release of my PTSD recovery memoir last week, I’ve been doing a lot of interviews. Last week Dr. Suzanne Phillips interviewed me about Strategies for Healing the Psychological Impact of Medical Illness. In addition to covering how parents can help children and the importance of self-care, I also talk about seven strategies for healing the psychological trauma of medical illness (which, by the way, equally apply to every trauma!). I was also on It’s Your Health! radio talking all about memoir, BEFORE THE WORLD INTRUDED, plus PTSD and recovery. You can listen to me describe how I healed and the number one thing that had a huge impact on my recovery here (scroll down to the April 26 shows).
In the meantime, here’s what I’ve been thinking about that’s a great support on the recovery journey:
When was the last time you felt really good about yourself? In PTSD recovery that idea of feeling good about yourself can go out the window. I know it did for me. But then, there were moments when I least expected it that I did feel really, really good about myself. Like the day I graduated with an MFA in Poetry. I felt like a good part of myself had kicked in, shown up and taken control. Hmmm. What did that mean?
Today I was coaching a Heal My PTSD Support Group member about how to elicit what he wants to feel. Technically, if you can imagine a feeling, emotion or state of being, you can create it. But how? Actually, it’s not as tough as it sounds.
Think back to a time that you really liked who you were. I know even in the midst of PTSD if you focus yourself hard enough you can think back to a time you were pleased with yourself, or felt happy in your own skin, or proud of something you had done. Now, what were you doing?
To further the support group member example: he knows that when he paints he feels ‘accomplished.’ Wow, what would it be like to access that feeling on a daily basis? How would it change how you see the world and interact with and in it if you were feeling all that instead of less than?
Today, do something that makes you feel good about yourself. It can be the smallest thing, like planting one single plant. But trust me, doing one small thing that makes you feel good can bring one big whoosh of a strong and supportive emotion.

This 7 week E-Course (weekly art and coaching videos, content pdfs and digital art sheets to use in your own art) includes imagery to help women access the recurring images in the story of their trauma as well as discover very personal healing images that can be used in the healing process. Members of the course will use art and journaling exercises to express and move through some of the feelings associated with their trauma, create and use rituals to begin to reclaim parts that they feel they have lost or have been buried underneath the trauma, and receive support from myself and others throughout the seven week process.
