PTSD Recovery Tip: Schedule Time for Emotional Release

It’s very common for trauma survivors to learn to suppress emotions. We do this for a variety of reasons, from maintaining our composure in professional settings, to shielding loved ones in personal settings, to avoid the pain of our own personal internal landscape.
 
I bet you’ve learned some nifty ways to squash down and squelch the urge to scream, wail or cry. To be honest, there are often positive benefits from learning to do this, including:
 
1. coping mechanisms for getting through the day
 
2. there are many situations that immediate release of enormous emotion would be inappropriate, i.e. work, class, public scene
 
3. we have a responsibility to shield people from our outbursts, especially children
 
What happens, though, when you spend so much time stuffing down all of that feeling? You know the answer to this! You feel worse and worse and eventually take out the pain on yourself or others.
 
One way to provide more balance is to schedule time for emotional release. Just like you schedule other things in life – meals, showers, exercise – you can schedule in time to cry, scream or write in your journal about all of the things you’re feeling. By doing this you provide release, relief and emotional connection for yourself that is private, personal and appropriate.
