One of the toughest things about trauma and PTSD is how it affects your confidence in yourself. Part of recovery means building that confidence back up!
There’s no doubt about it: Trauma can kill your confidence. When your belief in the world, other people, yourself and life in general takes a beating from your experience of a tragedy, it’s only natural that your belief in your own abilities takes a downward dive, too. You may have experienced a lack of confidence in your ability to hold a job, connect to the present moment, maintain relationships and even heal. All of this is a normal aspect of dealing with PTSD.
Whether it’s about making decisions regarding others, or choosing what feels right in your own soul about the person you wish to be, so much comes down to a belief in who you are, your right to create who you want to be, and giving yourself permission to do so because you have confidence in your decision-making process.
This is all hard to do but can become easier when you specifically focus on confidence building processes. For example, try this:
1 – Rate your confidence in yourself on a scale of 1-10 (10 being ‘I am ENORMOUSLY confident!’)
2 – What would it take to move that number up one notch?
3 – What would be the first step in doing that?
4 – What/who do you need to help you take that first step?
5 – When will you take that step to move yourself forward?
