So, you self harm and it’s getting too hot to keep covered up in jeans or long sleeves. What do you do?
Honestly? Don’t cover up. You should be ashamed of your scars. If they’re recent, you still shouldn’t be ashamed.
I served two people today at work who both self-harmed, but they found the confidence to ignore the people that don’t understand and to carry on just like you should.
You may fear what other people will think, what if they say something? What if they point and laugh? What if they stare? Let them. To them, they may not understand, but will see your bravery from covering up all the time, to facing fears and taking that first step to feel more comfortable.
This is the first summer I’ve got my arms out in three years. Yes, I still cover them up in places I feel less comfortable. But also I know that there are a lot of people who Self-Harm too. And we should not be ashamed because we’re different.
If you’re wanting to get a certain body part out, if this me your legs, stomach, or arms, but you don’t want it to be as visible, you can take steps to made them really faint.
There’s skin camouflage. You can get this from your GP or if you’re seeing CAMHS maybe you will be able to find the confidence in asking them about skin camouflage.
You could use press powder as well, make sure it’s a colour that matches the part you want to cover as you want it to blend in so its not really orange and stands out more than your self-harm.
Going to the GP may seem like a masisve step. Specially if you’re young and self-harm without your parents knowing. Which could make this difficult for you. But opening up to your parents, or someone you trust, then getting them to go to the GP with you could be much easier then hving your parents go with you.
