Transgender Law and Civil Rights

Legislative actions like HB2 and the discriminatory policy in Gloucester County, Virginia have powerful effects which reach far beyond those who are specifically targeted by their verbiage. As a new article in the High School Journal points out, these policies send a message to all students that we live in a society that has no problem singling out a group of people and distinguishing them as a lower caste. This is the type of society that the Civil Rights Movement has been working to break down. In every recent instance of discriminatory legislation passed against the LGBT community, special interest groups have cited reports and studies that show the issues legislatures are trying to solve are at best misguided, and at worst fabricated for political gain.
