What can I do to combat my fear of driving?

In this week's podcast we are responding to the question: "What can I do to combat my fear of driving? I have my worst panic attacks when I know I have to drive for 30 minutes or more."

The fear of driving is a big concern for a lot of people who suffer with anxiety. It may be fear of driving on your own, or even being a passenger in a vehicle with somebody else driving and you are suffering from anxiety due to a sense of loss of control.

Carry Rescue Remedy

Rescue Remedy is a natural combination of flower essences known to calm stress and anxiety it was developed by Dr Edward Bach and is available on Amazon or from Nelsons.

Rescue Remedy comes in a dropper bottle which is handy for adding a few drops to a bottle of water and sipping whenever you feel anxious before, or during, a journey. It also comes in a spray which is very handy for keeping in your pocket or in the car where you can pray it directly in your mouth when you need to.


Identify what you fear about driving

It's useful to get clear on what it is exactly that causes you anxiety about driving. You might like to get some paper and jot down your thoughts on driving.

Allow yourself time and space

Feeling rushed and pressured increases stress and anxiety. When you compress your anxiety with expectations and thoughts of "I should do this or that" you are in danger of your anxiety expanding and escalating.

Allowing time and being gentle with yourself helps keep your journey from causing you more stress.
