Self-Acceptance: The Dance of Light and Darkness

We tend to think of light and dark as opposites in conflict.

Many of our most popular movies are about the forces of light battling the forces of darkness. We may think the qualities of light and dark – or good and bad – are at odds within us as well.

Most of do not accept what we consider dark within ourself and try to hide it. However, there is another way to view light and dark. Adopting this can help us realize self-acceptance.

In this alternative view, light is what is known and darkness is what is unknown. The interplay of "what is known" with what is "not yet known" is a part of the creative process – and personal growth.

The Creative Process

Personal growth requires us to look within our self and acknowledge what is there. We look within using our conscious awareness.

The light of awareness does not destroy unawareness or what is hidden there. It is the nature of light to reveal and what is revealed simply remains in the light of awareness.

Some of what is revealed is the weakness and fragility of human life. Because what we see stirs our emotions, we also feel the consequences of our weakness and fragility.

Yet, if we accept what we see and feel, as the light accepts what it reveals, our capacity for compassion – of self and others – expands. In this way, self-acceptance is generated by the interface of light and shadow within us.

What Defines Us

Our tendency is to banish or conquer troubling beliefs, memories,or weaknesses, but our inner enemies define us if we resist them.

When we put energy into controlling our "bad" qualities they determine our actions. Under the light of awareness with acceptance, our shadows no longer define us by dictating what we must do to hide them.

Though facing certain inner shadows can be distressing, their power lies in our desire to be rid of them. In the light of awareness, what is revealed joins the creative dance of the universe.
