Six Dimensions of Well-Being: Are You Neglecting Any of Them?

Feeling stuck, or having problems in one area of life can easily affect other aspects of our life as well.

It is important to get our needs met in all the dimensions of life - even our least favorite one - to keep the whole of our life healthy as possible. Although there is more than one way to divide life into dimensions, the following six cover all the bases.

Six Dimensions of Well-Being

Individual needs will differ, but all humans have needs related to the emotional, intellectual, physical, spiritual, occupational, and social aspects of life.

The goal is not to strive for perfection, but understand your own needs in each area and do your best to meet them.

Emotional

Emotional well-being involves working toward the awareness and acceptance of our emotions and feelings, and taking responsibility for our actions. Relationships thrive when we let our feelings inform and guide us, but also use our rational and wise mind to help us choose what we actually say and do.

Intellectual

Intellectual well-being includes challenging our mind with stimulating and creative activities, investing in lifelong learning, staying knowledgeable about current issues, and enjoying our community’s cultural resources.

Physical

We all know the importance of eating a healthy diet, getting adequate physical exercise, plenty of sleep, and enjoying leisure activities. What this looks like for each of us will depend on what we consider healthy, what we enjoy, and are willing to do.

Spiritual

The spiritual dimension is simply keeping our actions consistent with our beliefs and values. Some people will also explore the meaning and purpose of existence, and may choose to walk a particular spiritual or religious path.

Occupational

The ideal in this dimension is finding fulfillment in life through work, expressing our values through our occupation, and contributing by developing and sharing our talents, skills, and gifts.

Social

The social dimension is not only about having relationships, but making choices that nurture our relationships, preserve the environment, and care for our self. Ultimately, it is realizing that by contributing to the environment and community, we are contributing to our own well-being.
