Six-time Oscar-nominated actress Glenn Close founded Bring Change 2 Mind in 2009. She is now opening up about her and her family's struggles with mental illness in a campaign to combat the stigmas attached to the mentally ill.
Close, 66, says her sister Jessie would rub her fingers together until they were raw as early as age 7. At the age of 47, Jessie was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and has been receiving treatment. Close says her family often ignored the signs and were ashamed to talk about mental illness being a possibility.
"Jessie said to me one day: 'I can't stop thinking about killing myself. I need help.'" It was a tragedy, Close admits, "that she wasn't diagnosed before then. But nobody in our family had a clue. I feel a real sense of shame that I didn't pay more attention at the time."
Other Hollywood stars, like Catherine Zeta-Jones, Ruby Wax, Stephen Fry and Oprah Winfrey, have come forward about their own struggles with mental illness as well.
