Depression risk after heart attack highlighted during American Heart Month

heart

February is American Heart Month and the American Heart Association's Circulation has found that heart attack survivors are three times more likely to develop depression than the general population. Fifteen to twenty percent of heart attack patients develop a major depressive disorder, the study continues, and many more experience depressive symptoms.

This is not an insignificant number since heart attacks are one of the leading medical conditions among Americans, with the AHA estimating that there is one heart attack every 34 seconds in the United States. Statistically, that means that up to one person every two and a half minutes suffers major depression after a heart attack.

The American Heart Association has more information on this and other American Heart Month issues on their website at heart.org. More information on depression's role in post-heart attack treatment can be found at the ValueOptions Stamp Out Stigma site on Facebook.

Remember to have a heart and empathize with those who suffer this American Heart Month.
