For people with depressive conditions, the last thing they feel like doing is celebrating the holiday season. Depression brings with it feelings of isolation, worthlessness, anxiety, mood swings and much more. Here we will explore ways of beating the winter blues that can help alleviate the symptoms of depression and make it easier on those suffering from the winter blues.

Winter Depression

Dr. Jeffrey Borenstein, CEO and president of the Brain and Behavioral Research Foundation said in a news release, “The holidays can be an especially difficult time for people who are depressed or grieving. People who are sad or lonely often feel out of sync when everyone else seems to be celebrating, and the holidays can exacerbate these feelings.”

If you are suffering from depression, you shouldn’t try to handle it on your own. If you aren’t in treatment, getting help is extremely important. Dr. Borenstein emphasized it’s important to continue depression treatment, especially during the holidays.
Borenstein stated, “The holidays are challenging for many people, but symptoms of depression are a sign to seek professional help. The most important take-home message is that depression is treatable and people should not suffer in silence, they should seek help.”

Isolating themselves is one thing depressed people tend to do. Instead of becoming isolated, a depressed person should make every effort to go to a family party or social gathering, even if they are not in the mood.

Someone with depression should never have unrealistic expectations about the holidays, because it can bring on disappointment. The holidays may also bring out long harbored family issues. Do your best to set aside any family issues. Instead of focusing on negative things, you should try to think about things that make you happy and be thankful for the good things in your life.

It’s important for someone with depression to get regular exercise, because it can help to improve your mood and releases endorphins which are the “feel good” hormones.

Some people who feel sad during the holidays might turn to alcohol use, but in actuality it does not help anything. Alcohol is a depressant and it can increase feelings of loneliness, anxiety and sadness.
Winter depression can also be a sign of seasonal affective disorder or SAD, which is a type of depression that’s triggered by lack of sunlight during the winter months. Treatments for this type of depression include light therapy, counseling and medications.

Don’t let the winter blues take over and make your life miserable. You have many types of treatment options available to help alleviate the symptoms of depression.
