Mariel Hemingway battles her family's demons through diet
Mariel Hemingway is best known as the tall, willowy actress of Star 80 and Manhattan. However, it’s her family’s history of mental illness which has compelled her back into the public eye.
She explores their psychological problems and her strategies for managing them in a new documentary called Running From Crazy, produced by Oprah Winfrey. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
Finding a way that works for you
Hemingway is now on a campaign for nutritious foods as a preventive approach to combating mental and physical diseases. After helping her ex-husband successfully battle cancer through lifestyle, food, home and exercise, she turned her attention toward herself.
“I did all kinds of things that didn’t work,” she said. Things that included veganism, macrobiotic and all-fruit diets before finding that it’s all about balance and whole foods.
Keep it simple
Simplicity seems to be what it’s all about. Hemingway tries to keep her diet down to the simplest ingredients without any additives.
“If you have a green smoothie or a couple of eggs with spinach and avocado, you’re going to feel differently than if you grab a cup of coffee and donut,” she said.
How you begin your day is very important, setting a tone for the entire day – not just visually and aesthetically, but physiologically as your body reacts to the food it takes in. Insulin response to carbs will change the food your body craves and your mental focus for the entire day.
Connect with food and nature
“Health and wellness really are my passion. As much as I love acting, nutrition has become my business – to get the message out there about food and nature, and their connection,” Hemingway concluded. She has written a cookbook as well, titled Mariel’s Kitchen.
